With the start of summer, many Canadians will be heading out on a boat and Transport Canada requires that anyone who operates a power-driven boat needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
Transport Canada provides a list of 19 accredited course providers, surprisingly 3 of these companies are owned by the Texas based Kalkomey Enterprises, LLC which is in turn owned by the Australian based Macquarie Group Limited, which is a publicly traded company.
The training providers that clearly identify themselves as Canadian owned are options:
Aceboater.com online course in English and French $59.95 with discounts for multiple people
albertaboatsafety.com online course in English, $44.50 with discounts for multiple people
aquasafeboating.com in person training
boatnbob.com online course in English, $34.99
canadaboatsafety.com online course in English, $49.99
canboat.ca online course in English and French, $49.99
driveaboatcanada.ca online course in English and French, $59.95 with discounts for multiple people
freecourse.ca online course in English, $59.95, currently offering $29.95 for a limited time
ispa.com focused on professional marine courses
lifesaving.org focused on in person testing and training
permis-bateau.ca online course in French, $59.95 with discounts for multiple people
safeboatingcourse.ca online course in English and French, $59.95 with discounts for multiple people
The three training sites owned by Texas based Kalkomey Enterprises, LLC are boaterexam.com/canada boat-ed.com/canada and boatsmartexam.com/ca. Both Boaterexam.com and BoatSmartExam appear to maintain offices in Ottawa and Peterborough respectively and started as Canadian based companies before being bought by Kalkomey.
Two more sites were unclear about their ownership and I have emailed to ask for clarification. I will update when possible:
