ShopCanadianStuff.ca is putting a focus on helping users to find products manufactured in Canada at Costco, both in the warehouses and through the Costco website. You might be wondering why we are giving Costco a bit of special treatment and there are a few reasons:
- Unlike almost every major retailer in Canada, Costco still makes no effort to identify products from Canada, either in store or online (except fresh produce which is clearly marked in store).
- Canadian shoppers simply seem to prefer Costco, and I believe most people already know that Costco is an American based company though it is publicly traded with shareholders all over the world (the Canada Pension Plan owns $254 million worth of shares). The table below shows there are more Costco locations per person in Canada than in any other market.
- ShopCanadianStuff.ca overall doesn’t advocate to boycott American owned business operating in Canada rather to proactively buy Canadian manufactured products wherever they are sold in part because people are more likely to participate in buying Canadian if it is easier and because we don’t want the estimated 1.47 million Canadians employed by American owned businesses to lose their jobs and we want them to participate in buying Canadian products rather than feeling like their own livelihoods are under attack.
